Musqueteer

Siu Kin Lee

Co-founder of musQueteer

The DNA of an organization is largely shaped by its founders. Such is the case with musQueteer. So meet Siu Kin Lee, one of the co-founders. A down-to-earth, committed and solution-oriented professional who found his way into entrepreneurship and has since become a devoted father.

The switch to musQueteer

Siu began his career in consulting, where he worked for many years in a large organization. The work was challenging, but the anonymous feeling began to gnaw at him. “When you went to the office, you just had to see if you recognized anyone. That still felt a bit lonely.” MusQueteer’s personal, small-scale approach appealed to him. When he got back in touch with Woen Hing, with whom he had always enjoyed working, he got the opportunity to join musQueteer. He grabbed it with both hands.

“At a big company you follow the rules, but at musQueteer you come up with them yourself. That’s not always easy, but it’s much more fun. You’re involved in everything and get the freedom to really build something.”

Where others stop, Siu continues

Siu gets a lot of energy from client projects. “I like it best when I can help customers with something they have been struggling with for months. Solving a complicated problem that they can’t solve themselves in a month’s time – that’s satisfying.” He notices that at large companies, tasks are sometimes passed on out of convenience. “I like to just roll up my sleeves and solve it.”

He also deals with HR and internal processes internally at musQueteer. Pension plans, human resources, and timekeeping – these are tasks he’s dabbled in. “Sometimes not necessarily the most fun work, but once you dive in and understand it, suddenly it does become interesting.”

Modesty is one of his hallmarks. “I often hear that I can beat my chest more, but I always think: surely anyone can do this?” Colleagues describe him as someone who senses what’s going on and takes others’ feelings into account. “Apparently I have a kind of radar for people. At least that’s what I often hear.”

Siu outside musQueteer

Siu was born and raised in The Hague, with roots in Hong Kong. He now lives in Zoetermeer with his wife and two children. He is a real family man and enjoys making memories with his family. “Some people think I spend too much time with my children, but I enjoy going out together. It doesn’t matter where we are, as long as we have fun together. Before you know it, they’ll be big and out of the house.”

Should you not run into him outside on one of the outings, there is still the chance you can spot him in the wild in a restaurant. “I basically eat anything and everything, and love going out to eat. But of course no one can match mom’s food, the taste you recognize from your childhood!”

Future ideals

Siu sees a future in which musQueteer grows in a controlled way, but doesn’t get too big. “We grew significantly for a while, but that didn’t work out well. Now we want to expand again, but with the right balance. For me, musQueteer doesn’t have to get bigger than 30 people.” His motivation remains the same: to build an organization where people feel comfortable and customers are truly helped. No politics, no endless shuffling of problems – just coming up with solutions and implementing them.
